Christoff
Vermeulen's Chrisridogs Border Collies.
The Border Collies owned and loved by me are working dogs in heart
and soul, they live for two things only, to do what they where bred
to do, to herd sheep, and to please their master.
My first Border Collie was a tricoular bitch called Nikie out of
the famous Jessie of Faansie Basson. Together we had to learn, Nikkie
to herd sheep, and myself to train a Border Collie to herd sheep.
Once I had mastered the skill to train and work with my collies
my life changed irreversibly. I would never be able to complete
my day tasks on our sheep farm in the karoo without a Border Collie
by my side again.
More dogs followed after Nikkie, all from Faansie Bassons Alfadogs
kennel.
After 5 years with my Alfadogs Border Collies I went to the United
Kingdom, to meet with the best handlers and dogs from top working
lines. I had the opportunity to over time import 4 of these top
UK dogs from Ray Edwards. They are now bred with my Alfa dogs stock.
Our Border Collies are not just for work, we also like the competitive
side of life and when we can we, we compete in the SASDA sheepdog
trails, hosted around SA. It is a very rewarding sport and very
good to be able to compare our dog's working skills against other
working dogs in SA.

The Border Collie is one of the
most intelligent of all dogs. The breed has an instinctive desire
to work closely and intensely with a human handler and are used
on farms to assist with the herding of livestock. This breed are
now also becoming increasingly popular as pets and are exceptionally
loyal companion animals.
The Border Collie is descended from droving and gathering breeds
originating on the Scottish-English and Welsh-English borders, including
the Cumberland Sheepdog. Mention of the "Collie" or "Colley"
type first appeared toward the end of the 19th century.
In general, Border Collies are medium-sized dogs without extreme
physical characteristics and a moderate amount of coat, which means
not much hair will be shed. Their double coats can be anywhere from
slick to lush, and can come in many colors, although black and white
is by far the most common. Black tricolor (black/tan/white or sable
and white), red (chocolate) and white, and red tricolour (red/tan/white)
also occur regularly.
Eye color varies from deep brown to amber or blue with occasionally
one eye of each color. The ears of the Border Collie are also highly
variable. In general a dog's appearance is considered to be irrelevant,
it is much more useful to identify a working Border Collie by its
attitude and ability than by its looks.
Border Collies require considerable daily physical
exercise and mental stimulation. They are happiest with a job to
do. However, a job to a border collie isn't necessarily working
livestock. An activity such as Frisbee, chasing and retrieving a
ball, or just simply playing chase will also suffice.
At Chrisri our dogs are best suited in their instinctive role -
that of a herder. These photos tell their own tale of the dedication,
concentration and pride of this unique breed on a task well done.
